HOLD EVERYTHING!!!
Luc and I received a letter in the post yesterday from the owners of this house to inform us that our 12 month lease will expire in two weeks and that they want the property vacated then.
By the 19th December.
Yes, five days before Christmas.
There is almost nothing decent around right now.
I hate that I have to deal with moronic real estate agents again and am feeling VERY sorry for myself/my family.

WTF? What a shock! And if you aren't out by then?
Is that LEGAL?!?!?!
oh, that's just terrible and heartless. i hope that things go well. it seems they would at least give you a month's notice. maybe you can sway them to let you stay a week ot two longer.
Is this legal?
In France the legal notice is 3 months.
I don't think they can throw you out if you haven't found a new place to dwell by the deadline... and if the law entitles them to, then the law should be changed.
My thoughts are with you.

Thank you Blurry, SquirrelyMojo, Junebee, April and Marie.
Unfortunately it IS legal for them to do this. The thing that angers me the most about this is that the agents informed us that the earliest we'd need to look at moving out is february and that 'they'd look after us'.
We haven't even told them that we're not interested in buying the property so the service overall is very poor.
I've been feeling very disheartened but determined to move and ask for more time. AFter inspecting five properties over the last two days, we found a good place today that we've applied for and will hopefully inspect another four tomorrow.
Either way we'll be out by the deadline and at least in a place that will have ducted air conditioning throughout!!

So this could turn out to be a good thing?
The Citizen and I were discussing this. (He asked if you found a new place yet). We were both wondering if in Australia, do you have to always rent through an agent? Is that a law or something?
Here in the States, any property owner can select tenants themselves. Or, if they don't want the hassle of screening tenants, collecting rent, and making repairs, they can engage a real estate agency to do it, for a fee of course.

Squirrely: I think it's turning out to be a good thing. Property in Sydney is damn expensive though and you can't find a decent three bedroom place close to the city for less than $600/week. The prices have increased since last year, that's the only bummer.
Junebee: We've found two places that we like and have applied for. It's not law to use a real estate agent, but convenient when you're searching for a place (I like looking online for the photos). I'd be happy to deal directly with an owner, but all the places we like use an agent.
We want to secure a place early this week so we'll have a week to pack, re-locate and organise things like our internet connection so there's not too much of a delay. ksve
